The AE86 is actually a Flawed Drift Car
Let me explain.
Its status is legendary in drift culture thanks to Initial D and Keiichi Tsuchiya, the Drift King. But in reality, it had plenty of drawbacks.
For starters, its mere 128 horsepower engine struggled to keep the rear wheels spinning. Drivers had to push it to the absolute limit to hold a drift. The AE86 relied heavily on momentum drifting — you had to enter corners at high speed and keep it sideways, because it simply didn’t have the power to accelerate mid-drift.
It also had a short wheelbase causing it to rotate quickly and a solid rear axle meaning wheels could not move independently. This made handling twitchy and unstable.
So why did it become a legend? Not because it was the best drift car, but because it demanded skill and mastery. Conquering the AE86 was a badge of honor for drifters.
