In this episode, I talk to Mike from Sydney Motorsport Engineering (SME) about the turbo kits his team and himself develop and produce. SME design and fabricate kits for the 86/BRZ platform, both in the FA20 and FA24 platform. These kits are amazing, and are a true bolt-on kit. No need to modify the sump or cutting of the crash bar, just bolt them on, tune and go.
The first time I sat in a turbo GT86, I was mind blown by how much faster it was over stock. It had 290 kW to the rear wheels, which is almost triple the stock output to the wheels. This new GR86 has proven to be much faster, and much more enjoyable to drive even in stock form, with the new FA24 engine – apart from all the RTV issues that have been surfacing on the internet.
With just the SME headers, full exhaust, E85 fuel and tune from PVS, the new GR86 puts out about 180kw to the rear wheels, which is quite insane. This full turbo kit almost doubles the stock power output with a measly 8 psi of boost, with the safest of tunes. That is just so insane, that 8 psi can almost double the power rating of this new motor which isn’t terribly slow in stock form. The actual power figure for this modest tune is revealed in the video.
SME have developed their turbo kits for the 86/BRZ platform for more than 10 years now, so they are pretty good at it. They’ve tuned their headers and exhaust for AGES and it sounds absolutely amazing – unlike all the P-Platers that slap on the loud and large Invidia N1 catbacks on their 86s.
PVS have been working with SME for the better part of a decade, tuning these motors to marry well with the SME kits and gosh has Tyler from PVS done a good job!
Despite being auto, this turbo charged GR86 feels super amazing and super responsive.
